Senators Joe Lieberman (I, CT) and Jon Kyl (R, AZ) have offered an amendment to the Defense Authorization Bill that "accuses Iran of fighting 'a proxy war against the Iraqi state and coalition forces in Iraq' and threatens to 'combat, contain and [stop]' Iran. The right wing has quickly latched onto the amendment, claiming it 'unflinchingly . . . calls on America to win’ against Iran.” (ThinkProgress) Senator Jim Webb (D, VA) called the proposal "Dick Cheney’s fondest pipe dream." He said it will be interpreted as a declaration of war on Iran. "Those who regret their vote 5 years ago to authorize military action in Iraq should think hard before supporting this approach. Because, in my view, it has the same potential to do harm where many are seeking to do good. . . At best, it’s a deliberate attempt to divert attention from a failed diplomatic policy. At worst, it could be read as a backdoor method of gaining Congressional validation for military action, without one hearing and without serious debate." (ThinkProgress)
