The Senate has now approved an increase in the limit of U.S. national debt. The House approved the increase a while back. Our limit is now $9.815 trillion. (Reuters) While this is shocking enough, a look at the recent history is really interesting.  When Ronald Reagan took office, the national debt was $935,100,000,000. By 1987 the debt limit had increased 184.26% to $2,800,000,000,000. Reagan incurred more debt than all presidents in the history of the U.S. combined. By 1990, the first Bush administration, the debt limit had increased another 44.43% to $4,145,000,000,000. Under Bill Clinton the debt limit increased 36.16% to $5,950,000,000,000. And, under George W. Bush, the debt limit has been increased 5 times, a total increase of 65%.
