Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama are certainly generating excitement in this election year. Democrats are all a-twitter about electing the first woman president or the first black president. I, too, would love to see a woman or a black as president. But this is not the time.
Since the Republican slate is so lacking and voters are so disgusted with Bush, the assumption has been that Democrats will take the White House and increase numbers in Congress. Maybe. But Democrats have to run the right candidate to pick up votes from the right-wing sector, and neither Clinton nor Obama can do it. The right-wingers will hold their noses and vote for whoever the Republican candidate is, no matter how bad.
What will it cost them if they nominate Clinton or Obama and the Republicans retain the White House? They’ll lose the opportunity to turn things around in this country. The opportunity to roll back 25 years of Reaganomics which have seen the demise of the middle class. The opportunity to institute a national health care system. The opportunity to take our country back from the corporations and return it to the hands of the people. All will be lost because the idealistic Dems couldn’t look at reality. I hope they wake up.
