Revamping Immigration Policy

Okay. I'm finally on-board. An article from the Washington Post today has convinced me our immigration policy needs a major overhaul. The Post tells the story of Saman Kareem Ahmad, who spent 4 years as a translator for U.S. forces in Iraq. Marine Captain Trent A. Gibson said, "Sam put his life on the line with, and for, Coalition Forces on a daily basis." He has... Read More

Passport Peepers

Everyone's a-buzz about the State Department contract employees accessing Barack Obama's passport file 3 times and, it seems, Hillary Clinton's file and John McCain's file were also accessed. (AP) The State Department's Inspector General was supposed to look into this. However, the State Department doesn't have an Inspector General. The former Inspector General, Howard... Read More

Tibet

Famed scholar of world religions Huston Smith noted, “Tibetan culture is to worldculture what the Amazon rain forests are to the environment.” It is a resource for health and benefitbeyond compare. Yet, since the Chineseinvasion in 1949 its authoritarian government has been waging what the DalaiLama calls “cultural genocide” against the people of Tibet. Over one million... Read More

The Baghdad Taj Majal

If you're listening to the presidential candidates, they're all arguing about how fast they'll pull the troops out of Iraq. If you believe it, you're dreaming. We ain't never leaving. Want proof? In addition to the 13 permanent bases we're building, there's the Baghdad Taj Majal.

The massive U.S. embassy being built in Baghdad will have 21 buildings, including a food court,... Read More

Conservatives and the Economic Crisis

How much of the current economic crisis is due to conservative values? That's not easy to answer. There are 2 primary conservative mantras: de-regulation and states' rights. What happens when these collide? Which one wins? It's clear. Getting what you want trumps states' rights every time. (See, for example, Bush v.Gore.)
That's where the current economic crisis started.... Read More

The Economy Sucks

Bear Stearns, the titan of Wall Street, was once worth $20 billion. By last Friday, it's stock was selling at $30 a share and this week it was purchased by J.P. Moran for $2 a share, a total value of $236 million. They either had to sell or file for bankruptcy. How could J.P. Morgan absorb all the bad debt that's driving Bear Stearns into the sewer? Easy. The Fed is... Read More

Will the House Cave In?

According to the New York Times, the House is getting ready to pass a FISA bill that will give the telecommunications companies the retroactive immunity that Bush has been seeking. Yes, they're caving in. Representative Silvestre Reyes (D, TX), chair of the House Intelligence Committee which is drafting the new law, said Sunday that the committee had been talking to the... The True Costs of Our Military Incursions

Our military incursions into Iraq and Afghanistan have been more costly than anyone is admitting. If you remember, during the the build-up Bush said this would cost us no more than $50 billion. (USA Today) Yeah. Right. It's now the second most expensive in U.S. history (WWII the most expensive) and the second longest (Vietnam the longest). And let's get this right. To call... Read More
